Hello everybody, I am hoping to cruise two areas during an extended summer vacation in 2002, Long Island Sound and Cape Cod. I am looking for advice regarding charts. does anyone who has cruised these areas have advice regarding the charts I should purchase? Anybody tried the books/guides of the area? I need to be very budget conscious here, but I also don't want to run aground or hit a rock somewhere... thanks for your feedback and ideas... Dale Phillips

Two cruising Guides...

D., Maptech (Embassy) makes excellent cruising guides for those areas. They are 1) Long Island Sound and 2)Rhode Island, Massachusetts and NH. They are excellent guides and will tell you everything you need to know. They are about $35 each, but worth it. Maptech also makes a Long Island Sound Chart to compliment the cruising guide. It too, is excellent. It give waypoints, courses, etc. But that covers only NYC to Block Island. Then there are 2 NOAA charts for 1)Narragansett Bay/Buzzards Bay as well as 2)Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Unfortunately, I don't have the chart #'s handy. Get them early to study them. Also look at Maptech's site (See Related Link below).

You will love

the Long Island Sound. Unfortunately it requires a good deal of motoring, but there are many great stops. Don't miss Oyster Bay, Huntington, Port Jefferson, Saybrook, Coecles Harbor, Sag Harbor, or Greenport.

Naragansett Bay is worth the trip

But then again so are Block Island, Nantucket, the Vineyard, Mystic, Stonington, Newport, etc. What will your route be? This board will help with ideas if you like. RRegge S/V Allie Kat

What do you mean?

Mike, I am planning a LI sound trip next summer, coming up from Raritan Bay, NJ. You mentioned quite a bit of motoring. Is that because of a lack of wind? I plan on heading out to Port Jeff and back. What harbors are suggested? How about showers, town docks etc? Any info will help.
