Charts update Raymarine C-80 chartplotter Hunter 33 2006

Does anyone know how to update charts on my Raymarine C-80. I added waypoints, and tracks to add information from Notices to Mariners, but it is becoming somewhat cluttered. As far as I know all current Navionics maps are sold primarily on MicroSD or SD cards, but my plotter uses old Compact Flash cards.

Is there a way to buy up-to-date charts and transfer them to the CF card in a way that they would work in C-80?

There are adaptors that you can plug in the MicroSD into CF adaptor.

The link below is to the Navionics Compatibility chart. According to the chart the C-80 charts must be downloaded on to Compact Flash cards. If I understand correctly, you'll need a computer than can read and write to SD cards to get the charts. Follow up Navionics Customer Support for more details.

Thank you for your answer. However I am not sure it would work, as the C-80 can only handle the CF cards up to 1GB.

Thank you for your reply. I have a computer and card reader capable of doing that. When I first got the boat with this chart plotter I tried to make a backup copy of the CF card, just in case, but it did not work - the plotter did not read it. So I wonder if it would work if I decide to buy expensive current charts and copy it to a CF card. As I mentioned, my original is 20 years old but I added Canadian Notmar information to it.

Tomek, I am not sure what you are indicating. The CF Adaptor has no limitation. If you plug in a 500MB MicroSD then you have a 500MB CF. The limitation may be the plotter you are plugging into. Is the MicroSD with maps contains data files that is larger than the plotter can handle?

I couldn't find information on the storage size of the Navionics+ SD/MicroSD cards. Typical SD cards available now have at least 16GB capacity. My plotter manual says it can handle CF cards of up to 1GB, so it is likely that my plotter will not read SD card larger than that even if it will pretend to be a CF card.

In googleing for the size of the file for Navionics Blue chart, it indicates it varies the area it covers and it may be as much as 20GB.
You may be ready for a new chart plotter.
I use Garmin 76CS that I bought in 2004. I bought the charts that was on a CD. It is still accurate for me. I can not upgrade the charts. I too am ready for a new chart plotter.

As I mentioned, my original is 20 years old but I added Canadian Notmar information to it.

20 year old chart plotters are way past their end of life. Modern chart plotters are faster, have better screen resolution and visibility, and more (sometimes) useful features. Networking with NMEA 2000 is much easier than with NMEA 0183 which is really long in the tooth.

I had a C-90W that used the old large SD memory cards. First you have to buy a card from Garmin/Navionics for the region you want. Then you need a CF to USB adaptor. Not expensive. You get around the memory limitation by only downloading the portion of the map area that you need. The downloader app handles that. You can readjust the map download whenever you update. Unless your going on a multi day voyage its fine.

Below is the checklist I made when I would update my C-90W:

Chart Plotter Navigation Updates C-Series

Need:
SD card from C90 Chart plotter
USB to SD Card adaptor
CI Launcher Software on laptop

-Remove SD Card from nav station chart plotter
-Put in adaptor and insert into laptop USB
-Start Garmin CI Launcher software
-“Update” updates the already selected chart area. “Download” lets you select a new chart area. Note: it will delete SD card. That’s okay.
-Update card and remove from laptop.
-Reinsert SD card into C90 chart plotter.
-Done

Hope it helps. This worked fine for me. You probably have a memory limitation on the C-80 that will force you to download a smaller area than the region you paid for. But you can revise the smaller area during any update.

the navionics cards have a hidden file that carries your license number - that keeps you from making a copy of the card. I don't know what the c80 has, but i got a damaged card from navionics and they had a way to upgrade the hidden file so I could use the card -I'd talk to them and find out precisely what steps you need to take to use a m-sd card in the adapter in your plotter

I upgraded a late 1990s C120 a couple years ago. Had to purchase a special package off their confusing website. It came with a new 2GB(?) flash card. The cards have something written on them to identify as a bonafide card, trying to repurpose other ones did not work.

Given the limits of the storage available on the card, I was able to draw a rectangle for the subset of North America charts that I needed on the laptop and load that onto the card.
