Hello everyone, I am considering installing a chartplotter on my '96 P42. Was looking at the Garmin Gpsmap 172C

Seatalk

Hey Mike, Your friend is right; the older Autohelm equipment did use Seatalk and was not compatible with NMEA equipment. Why not take a look at the Raymarine series. That would solve the integration problems, as you would only be dealing with one brand. I installed a Raymarine C80 last year, and I am very happy with it. And if you have other equipment that use NMEA, the C80 does have NMEA output and input ports.

The Autohelm 7000 course computer has NEMA

I have a 7000 with a Corepack 100/300. It has a NEMA input and I use that with my old Micrologic GPS. If all you want is to interface the Garmin GPS/Chartplotter with your autopilot, I think you will have no problem. BTW, I am thinking of upgrading my old Micrologic GPS to a Garmin Chartplotter and I am interested in any interface and operation issues that anyone can speak to. I also have a Raytheon radar and ST50 instruments.

Interface AP/GPS

I have a Garmin GPSMAP 276C which is connected to the Raymarine 4000+ autopilot and they work great together. You don't need the Seatalk for this. You just plug the wires from the GPS into the back of the autopilot head, which in my case are mounted side by side. If you need to get power from the seatalk, you can tap right into it or you can tap into other available power at the helm like the radio. I installed a GPS antenna on the rail, but don't use it because the build in GPS antenna works fine by itself under the bimini. Lee

Mike, we have a 1991 P42 equipped with...

an Autohelm 7000 course computer/motor and 6000 head. I have cruised over 2,000 miles on the Garmin 178C my family got for me last year that is plugged into the 6000 head NMEA port. I'm very happy with the integration performance. Terry
