chartplotter/sounder

I'm in the market for a chartplotter/sounder. The Garmin178c looks
like a good size for the Vega, but I have been advised that mounting
the transducer through the hull as opposed to a transom mount will
reduce the ability to determine what the bottom contour and
composition is(I'm not looking for fish-just a view of the bottom)
Does anyone have any experience with installing a transom mount
transducer on a Vega?

The Garmin 178c does not only look like a good size, it is perfect
for the Vega.
Whats concerning the through hull transducer, it works perfectly on
my Vega.

I have used a Garmin Plotter/Sounder and mounted the transducer (the
transom mount type) under one of the berths with a liberal coating of
Vaseline between the transducer and hull. Works well for bottom
detection and no holes to drill.

I have a Garmin chartplotter/sounder on my Vega (a bit
older model, though). First, I tried to install the transducer
on the transom. The biggest problem was that it fouled
rather quickly (full of algae and barnacles), and it is not
easy to clean (if you want to avoid damage).
I then mounted it on the bottom of the aft lazarette (I cut
a piece of PVC pipe at an angle so that it would hold the
transducer in a straight-down position in spite of the
angled bottom). I filed the void with lots of vaseline. Has worked
like a charm ever since...
