I want to install a 8" or 12" Raymarine C series chartplotter/radar receiver at the helm. My 380 has the large fiberglass steering pedestal with attached tables. The only solution I see is to install a larger stainless hand-hold rail at the helm to allow for a Navpod device to hold the unit. Has anyone done this? Did you need to custom build the stainless rail? I checked with Hunter but they do not have a ready-made device to install. Thanks!

Bill, I did the same install on my H380. First I removed the grab rail on top of the console. This is held in place by two nuts, the bolts are welded to the grab rail. I used the mount that came with the display only because there was no Navpod available at the time. I remounted the grab rail to the front side of the console to keep people from grabbing the display, turns out that this is a more useful location anyway for the grab rail. The other option would be to mount the display on the traveler arch, but I preferred the top of the console. Hope this helps. Paul Bednarzyk S/V La Dolce Vita H41DS

Jerry: You mention a stainless steel extension to the grab rail. I also have a 356 and am considering a big chartplotter. So did you mean a true extension, in which case where do you get it and where does it attach to the current grab rail--where does the grabrail have a joint? This photo looking at the back may show it better. At commissioning, Lighthouse Landing took off the original ss tube and put the extension on. I don't know whether Whitlock, Navpod or some other company provided the extension. You may can see in this photo (look very closely), screws joining the two pieces just below the fiberglass navpod. The new extension overlaps the existing tube. For detailed info, contact Tim at Lighthouse Landing.

I put a C80 at the helm of my 44
I think the helm set-up on the 38 is very similar to the 44. I moved my wind, speed and depth gauges onto the header above the companion way. I then moved my 7001 autohelm onto the binnacle and installed a Navpod pod with a Raymarine C80 onto the existing handhold/pedestal guard. It does blanket part of the autohelm's display when standing but I never use it's heading info anyway. If you want, I may be able to send pictures, but not until after the weekend.

I have a C120 in the top of the grap rail and below are the ST 60 Instruments (wind, depth and speed). In the binnacle is the 6001 autopilot, bow thuster control and a Raymarine 300 GPS. This set up is not the best as I have to stand while navigating in close quaters and in crab pots fields. I am thinking about moving the ST60s to the top of the companionway so I can lower the C120 by about 4-6 inches. The are a few complications: the wind cable may be bundled with other wires inside the boat and that I will have to cut & splice the radar antena wire to lower the C120 pod if I need a new grap rail. A good winter/spring project. The 300 came with the boat and an added redundancy. The C120 & 300 share the same GPS antena. I also added a T bracket to support the extended grap rail.
