The only downside, at least in the Ray boxes, is that the offcourse alarm is not configurable to a reasonable number when using wind vane mode.
Meriachee, I am not sure if all are similar but the SPX autopilot's Off Course Alarm is programmable from 15° to 40° in 1° steps (default 20°).

+1 for Terry. I get a good sense of the surroundings by making up a planned route prior to departing just about every trip. I probably employ the autopilot 50%+ while motoring or while under sail. My use of the autopilot is predicated on traffic, wind, location to hazards . . . and all the other bits of common sense.

That's all well and fine, except where the wind input gets subjected to these mountain 180 degree wind shifts and impacts from shore based reflections. Not everybody is far enough from shore to be able to exist within a 40 degree variation unfortunately. I'd like the ability to shut it off without wanting to whack it with a stick sometimes. :)
