Hello All, I will be traveling to the Baltimore MD area for work in the first part of October and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a charter company that would rent me a boat for a day of sailing. Being in landlocked Colorado I try and take any chance that I get to get on bigger water, especially since our season got cut short this year (drought). Being that I am unfamiliar with the Baltimore area and the bay, I think it would be prudent to find a company that would be able to send someone out with me. Anyone have a boat and want to go out sailing for the day? I will be staying in Towson and I am willing to travel a couple of hours if necessary to get my sailing fix. The problem is the only day I have available is Monday October 7th. Thanks in advance for the help. Clayton clayton.fawcett@lafarge-na.com

Info.

Not sure about Baltimore, but there are many souces in Annapolis (it being basically the sailing capital of the world and only 20-30 mins from Baltimore.) Do an internet search and you will find them (e.g., Sunsail, AYC, etc.) I think daily rentals can be expensive, depending on what you want big boat, little boat, etc. The bigger the better on the bay, especially if it's cold/windy. Problem with Baltimre is it's up a river. To get out into the bay (which you really have to do if you're here) you have to go down river a good ways from Baltimore to get into the bay. And, the river ride is not the pretty part of the bay (IMHO). Annapolis is right on the bay and a pretty incredible place. Plan to have breakfast/dinner there and walk around, etc. There are also lots of things to do in Baltimore, and I assume you will have time there too. If not, I'd choose Annapolis, but then again, I live there. Check with me closer to the date and we might cook up a day sail. That is if I haven't left for Florida. Don dcdon@hotmail.com

You might also try Harve DeGrace

It's a small community about 30 to 40 minutes northeast of Baltimore just off route 95. I'd suggest you try Tidewater Marina. The village is not quite as nice as Annapolis, but it is quaint, has some resturants and is at the mouth of the Susquehanna River. Lots of sailing. Tidewater may actually know someone who might be looking for a crew member for that Monday. Good luck and fair winds Hayden

Lots of opportunities

I did some research on bay chartering last year. There are a fair number of charters available. Most of the larger companies rent larger boats for extended periods. You might consider contacting a sailing school if you are looking for a guide. BaySail in Havre de Grace does both (http://www.baysail.net/) If you want a fairly short ride and don't want to pay for it, go to a dealer and see if you can get a test sail. Below is a link to a list of charters. Mark Burrows

Annapolis is your best bet

I used to live in Maryland and even in October, you should still be able to find a decent open daysailer (e.g. Flying Scot) or small keelboat (Catalina 22 or H235) for rent in Annapolis or nearby. Get the 410 or 443 area code yellow pages and start searching. If memory serves me correct, the Annapolis sailboat show is about that same time too, and that definitely should not be missed! Good luck & happy sailing. Peter H23 "Raven"

Don't forget Rock Hall, MD

I have chartered twice from a place on the piece of MD directly across the bay from Baltimore. The town is called Rock Hall. They have one of the best seafood restaurants for bay style food anywhere right in town and several charter companies. I have used Haven Charters with great success both times. There is less of a crowd in Rock Hall and it is just a neat area. With good wind you could make the trip to Annapolis and back in a day without much difficulty. You have got to sail under the bridge! I have included a link to the charter company. Their are others. Best of luck! Bill Sieber S/V Tsunami H240
