We are thinking about chartering a Catalina 36 to Catalina Island this summer out of Marina Del Rey. We anticipate a midweek cruise. Any comments/opinions would be appreciated. Is overcrowding a concern on weekdays? Thanks!

There is a great company named Bluewater Sailing in MDR that can answer all of your questions. They have mostly new boats. Midweek Catalina is usually no problem. If it gets busy on the weekend it is first come, first serve so you should be fine. It is a great, great place to visit with a boat. good luck Derek deerock@earthlink.net

Sailorschoice.com. I've found in the summer if you get to Avalon early in the AM during the week its not too bad. The earlier in the week you arrive, the further down the list you are to be asked to leave or move. ie: if you arrive on Monday you have a better chance of staying through the weekend than someone who arrives on Thursday. The moorings are all privately owned, so if the owner arrives and wants his mooring you will be moved to another one. Stay away from the three day weekends Memorial, 4th and Labor day. If your heart isn't set on Avalon ther are many coves and inlets to explore.. Dick McKee S/V Constellation

On a job in LA a while back I located a local in San Pedro that rented me his boat for the weekend. I sailed over, got becalmed for a while and had to motor some, but a great trip. Be careful how you leave the moorings in Avalon, I picked up the mooring stick and wound it around the prop. No damage to the boat but an expensive lesson to get it out. S/V Cynara

and compare Seamist Charters. They have a website. About a half dozen boats. Near my slip and I am very impressed by their maintenance and professionalism. Suzanne is the owner. As for the island, moorings on the outside harbor of Avalon should be available during the week if the inside are filled. Isthmus and Cherry coves are Great. Catalina has a website with some useful onfo. Have a good trip. Rick D.
