I just purchased a Standard Horizon CP175C Chart Plotter that I will be installing this spring... this is my first Chart Plotter and not sure where I should mount the antenna... If I install the antenna on the stern Rail, will I get enough signal? I heard that when you heeling that the antenna tends to loose the signal... anyone sail with one on your boat? Where did you mount it? Any suggestions on where to mount it... it’s a fairly small antenna (pic attached) Thanks. Fob Catalina 27

Install it on the pushpit top rail

That's one of the best locations that the manufacturer recommends it can be located. Heeling won't interfere with the signal whatsoever. I have been practicing with mine in the family room at home, the signal has to go through two stories to reach the sky. It always picks up a signal and works. Even lying the antenna on its side and pointing towards the sky (through the patio doors at about 30 degrees) gets an acceptable working signal. I have also had the antenna down below on the boat, and it reads through the glass and ply just fine.

Just installed on last month

and I am having a bimini made, so my antenna is not mounted yet. I have been pleasantly surprised to find that even with the antenna laying on its side down in my lazerette, that the signal still comes in strong.

Companionway

Jim's suggestion to mount the unit on the pushpit is a good one. I've been happy with the performance of my GPS antenna mounted just above the companionway - under the dodger and boom! Bottom line, set it wherever is convenient and if it seems to get decent signal mount it there! Best, Trevor

Antenna mounting

They can also be mounted inside a locker or inside the cabin. They are less vulnerable to damage and water ingress inside and providing they are mounted vertically and not under metal components they work fine.

Locating the antenna

I'd hook up the unit but not fasten the antenna. Then I'd go for a sail and move the antenna about until I found the ideal spot, interior or exterior. I like the idea of mounting it inside so that it is out of the weather and not subject to being knocked about. If there's no degradation in performance, that's where it would go.
