My wife and I did something a little crazy at this falls Newport RI boat show. We went there withthe idea of possibly trading up our 1991 Hunter Legend 375, to the new Hunter 42 pilot. Instead, we decided to keep our 37 Legend, and bought a 21 ft Stiegercraft power boat. The model is the Block Island 21, a commercial hull sort of soft top small lobsta boat, we are former power boaters (25 years exp) and used to do a lot of scuba diving until we bought the sailboat in 2000 (diving from a sailboat is doable, but it takes soooo long to get to the good sites). So anyway, we pick the boat up in April at a marina on Ninagret pond, and have to take it through the Charlestown Breachway. The charts I have don't show much. I bought the most recent edition of Coastal Pilot #2. All it says is there is a depth of 5 ft in the breachway, but inside local knoledge id required. Does anyone out there have any first hand experience with the breachway? The breachway is supposed to be the 6th worst on the east coast. Chris s/v Tidesong m/v Mystic Explorer

Chris-Charlestown breachway does not have 5 feet of water at low tide unless you are riding on top of a wave! You need to ride a wave to get in the breachway anyway and I know there is(was)a rock in the middle that claimed several lower unit and props this past summer(at low tide) Might I suggest you go down and watch boats coming in and out and talking to so of the local before getting to confident at low tide. I know three people who keep there boat on the pond and all get in and out anytime they need but they have the local knowledge.(at least one learned the hard way about the rock in the middle of the breachway at low and got a $2300 worth of "knowledge")At any rate send some time talking to the locals!
