The Admiral & I are going to get away for 5 days in March. Going to visit the great state of South Carolina and are staying at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina. What's you comments on this harbor? I understand it is quite large. We will be happy just walking the docks, eyeing the boats, and talking to fellow sailors. Hope we can gain access to the docks? We have heard/read so many good things about this area we could even consider retirement, semi-retirement there. This is our first trip there. (Our state,Illinois, is about as messed up as you can get- I'll try not to bring politics here) What other harbors might you recommed we visit for just walking the docks? And yes I know about the Yorktown. I am a Navy man and we will make the visit. Also looking forward to visiting downtown Charleston. Thanks.

I've stayed at that marina. While nice, it's not in Charleston. It's actually a bit isolated. You have to either drive over the bridge or take the water shuttle - which is great fun but not quick and may not even be running a full schedule in early March. The marina is right next door to the Yorktown. You're right, not to be missed, but the Admiral may get a bit testy after the third visit 
The great dock walk in Charleston is the Megadock at Charleston City Marina. It's 3000 feet long with lots of amazing boats. The dock you walk just to get to the megadock is bigger than most marinas. Plenty of other docks too. You need a key at night but just walk on out during the day. I guess they figure that anyone willing to hike that far to look at boats can't be much trouble. And the Ashley Marina is next door with a nice Marriot Courtyard. The historic bits of Charleston and a lot of great restaurants are about a mile away.

My Buddy and I stayed at the resort for 2 days while he looked at buying a Bene 323.
It was in March of last year so the weather wasn't warm for sailing but it was better than the weather in Toronto.
The Hotel was very nice. Clean rooms. The food was OK. Price wasn't bad since we walked in off the street without reservations.
The marina is nice. You can walk from the Hotel down to the docks and along the docks all the way over to the Yorktown, Taking in all the beautiful boats. We saw a lot of dolphins just outside the marina.
There's a sailing school down at the docks and also a yacht broker.
Watch for the giant Marlin over the entrance way to the Hotel.

Been there a couple of times. Took the ferry out to Fort Sumter and visited the Hunley exibit and the open market. Don't know if it is just the times I was there or just because of the traffic but Charleston Harbor was quite chopy. Love the town and will go back but would hardly consider it a premier sailing area.
