Okay the vessel is mine a 1996 Hunter 40.5, I am Excited and scared at the same time. This maybe a simple question but when charging from shore power ie the battery charger is on do the 4 deep cycle batteries charge of this or just off engine power. 2nd question is the panel I show battery voltage off test batt 1 but nothing on the others 2 to 4. So not sure if I have a problem or not The batteries we no good so I replaced all four deep cycle batteries and did not change the Engine starting battery as it works fine.

Rusty, Hard to know this one.. I see a Xantrex remote indicator panel which is showing 5 amperes of charge into two batteries or two banks of batteries, depending on how they wired them up.. It would be logical to have the engine charge the start battery through an isolator and the Xantrex charge the big banks and have the engine charging the big ones too when running. You'll probably have to do some detective work to see how they hooked up the stuff.. it doesn't look like Hunter standard(?). Congratulations! and happy Hunting!

Definitely have a knowledgeable friend look at it.
I will be changing my set up so the engine charges the starting battery, and using an echo charger for the other bank with the engine running.
I think the standard method is to use the battery selector switch to choose which battery bank is charged or loaded at any time, but this can be an issue depending on the equipment use.
The battery charge indicator may be wired directly to the batteries or through the selector switch. Did you select the appropriate bank with the switch when using the charge indicator? That sounds like the issue.
Think carefully before you change anything. Good luck.

I have a 1997 h40.5 and the original OEM charger was a Guest 30A with a 3A aux output. The 30A output charged the house bank and the 3A output charged the starting battery. However you say that you have 4 deep cycle batteries for the house bank and I know that the original configuration was two 12V deep cycles. At some point someone changed the battery setup and so you should check to see if the battery charging is still connected correctly. If the house batteries are always connected together as one large bank then the charger will service all of them. But if you have 1-2-Both-Off switches then you may need to switch all of the batteries together in order to have them all charged.

Regarding your indication of battery voltage on #1 but not on #2-4, you will just need to trace your wiring to see where it is not connected properly. You have a different battery monitor than I have.

Maine and Stu both suggested to me that it is preferable to have the alternator wired directly to the house bank. When you're on shore power the Xantrex can charge both banks.

I have a 1993 40.5 and this is the way that mine is set up. (I still have the original charger from the factory.)

I have an on/off switch for the house batteries, located in the starboard rear cockpit hatch. The originals were (2) 12 volts, but I now have (4) 6 volt batteries wired in series/parallel.

I have a 2nd on/off switch (located inside the engine compartment under the stairs) for the starting battery.

My charger charges both the house and starting batteries. The voltage meter on my electrical panel only shows me the house battery voltage.

take a volt meter and check. turn the charger off and read each 12 battery or two 6 volts in series). Write down the voltage for each. Turn on the charger and re-measure. The ones that show a voltage increase are the ones getting charged.
if only one set of 6 volts is taking a charge check the 1-both-2-off switch to see if it is on 1 or 2
On my 1993 40.5 the alternator charges all the batteries (three way in both position) through two isolator diodes and the charger charges the house banks through the three way switch.

Thanks , the four batteries are on one bank and read off the aftermarket gauge only the starter battery shows on the panel. I tested with a volt meter and both starter batt and deep cycle four pack are getting a charge from the alternator and charger when on shore power. Now on to the next task replacing window seals
