I have owned my 1984 Catalina 27 for six years. I am having an issue with the battery charging system. It is a Sea Ranger Marine Battery Charger 1500 Automatic. I have no manual or have any info about this unit. Last season I purchased two new Deep Cycle batteries for the boat. This season, I am having difficulty charging the batteries, or at least that is what I think. I am plugged into shore power, have the charger plugged into the GFI outlet in the galley and have had the battery bank in the cabin in the "Off" position. This morning, I tried to start the boat on #2 battery & got nothing but "clicking" with no turnover, did the same on #1 battery with the same result. When I put the battery bank on "All" it turns right over. In all the time I have had this boat - I don't recall having to put the battery bank on "All" position to start the boat. I am thinking the batteries are not "charging" when I think they are...maybe it is not even the batteries. Could it be the engine starter, cellinoid or something else?? Does anyone have any suggestions for me. Thanks in advance, Jim

get a voltage meter

My first suggestion would be to get a voltage meter and test each battery to see what kind of charge they're carrying. If they're both fully charged, then I'd start looking for loose wiring or corrosion in the battery switch. Sounds to me like each battery on it's own isn't delivering enough juice to start the engine, but that doesn't necessarily mean the battery is dead. Corrosion, bad wiring etc can be the culprit. Start at the batteries and move forward from there. Good luck!!! JimmyD

are very often the source of electrical issues. Check them first. Then find out more about more battery charger. It could well be that it is not working. More likely it could be an old ferro or 2 stage charger that may be killing your batteries. Try downloading the Ample Power Primer from www.amplepower.com to read about the proper way to charge batteries and make them last longer. Stu
