My batteries discharged while the ac current was off on the dock. My questions is, Do I need to open the battery boxes before I turn on the battery charger? And is there anything else I need to do before charging?

I'd check the water levels before turning the charger back on. In most cases, the battery boxes have sufficient ventilation that you shouldn't have any issues.
