In a standard 2-battery setup, with a Starter/Battery 1, ALL, and House/Battery 2 selector dial, do you normally need to select "ALL" if you want the battery charger to charge both batteries? Whatever the answer, should I assume that the same applies when the engine runs and the alternator charges the batteries? My pal claims both batteries charge no matter which is selected. Neither of us is smart enough to figure it out on our own, especially since we don't have voltmeter gauges. Thanks.

Properly installed,

the battery charger will charge both batteries no matter what position it is in, including off. Engine driven alternator will charge only which ever selection is made on the switch.

depends on the wiring.

Brett: I my opinion, the selector switch should have nothing to do with the battery charger. We have heard about several boats that are wired through the selector switch. I do not think that this is a very good idea. The boat sits in the slip for days and weeks at a time with no one in attendance. A good charger can optimize your batteries, which you cannot do even if you are there every day. If you are not capable of tracing down the wiring, you may want to have someone give you a hand to do it properly. When you are using the alternator, you are in control of the charging (or not).
