I am putting on a new 4 cycle engine that incidentally has charging capability, is it much of a task to get it set it up to charge the main battery?

Outboards & charging

We have a pair of wires, 12 ga, running directly from the outboard to the battery. They enter the boat through a hole in the outboard well which has a clamshell cover. I've never been impressed with the charging abilities of our Honda 5hp which has a 3 amp output at max RPM. I figure it would need to run a few hours to more than just topoff the batteries.

Don't forget a 15 amp fuse to the (+) lead.

The alternator output for a small outboard is intended more to run some navigation lights at night than to recharge a battery. It will give you a trickle charge and that is about it.
