charcoal grilling?

Hi folks, I have a few grilling questions as we face the upcoming season: 1. I have to assume that grilling at the dock is a no-no, right? 2. I have a charcoal grill. What do I do with the hot coals after I am done with them? Dump 'em overboard? What about the red-hot grill? 3. Can't a grill be dangerous with an outboard fuel tank in the cockpit? 4. I have heard hardwood is better than brickettes (sp?). Thoughts? Any lighting methods? Contradictions? Keep on sailing! Richard H23 "Invictus"

Grill must overhang the water

A grill never be used in the cockpit, only overhanging the water. There are various types of rail and gunwhale mounts available for marine grills to do this. When a grill is used overhanging the water, it's safe. After you're done, put the lid on, close the vents to make the fire go out. When the grill is cool, dump the charcoal (you can even dunk the grill to rinse it out if you want to). Lighting it can be tricky...use the lid to shield it from any wind...us a long barbeque lighter. When I used charcoal, I always used the kind that's already saturated with starter. Be careful, and you shouldn't have any problems.

Go with bottled gas

Use a grill the uses bottled propane. Storage is easier and no mess. Less open flame that charcoal. Just as economical IMHO. The only place I have used charcoal is on a charter boat (for obvious reasons) and found it messy, burns faster than sometines needed, burns longer than sometimes needed. Ashes went into the water :{ and blew all over the place. Lost the grid overboard.

Just let them burn out.

Richard: We used a charcoal grill on our boat for many years. If you leave the lid on with the vents open the charcoal will just turn into ash. This can then be dumped overboard or disposed of in a trash can. You may want to get a container that will help prevent the charcoal being exposed to the dampness (this was not much of a problem in our area). We now have a gas grill too. I really prefer the charcoal, but had been instructed by the admiral to upgrade.

Fwiw...

Gas grills should only be used while overhanging the water too...never in the cockpit.
