To all southern Californians: I'm finally making the crossing. I'm sailing to Catalina Island and would like to hear from anyone out there who has done it and have and any particulars. i.e. sailing time, provisions, mooring at the island, stayed where on the island, how much gas, etc. I'm getting my lights ready and do have a ship to shore radio. I want to go either in August or September. Any feed back would be appreciated. Chris.

To Catalina Island

I have been crossing to Catalina Island since 1984 in my C27. Both from Del Rey, and now from San Pedro. Use channel 9 when in close to call the Harbor Patrol at the cove you are going to moor at. My first stop is usually at Emerald Bay. The book "Boating and Diving Catalina Island", by Bruce Wickland. ISBN 0-9646281-4-7 has a good intro on sailing and mooring at Catalina. Thr trip from San Pedro id 4 - 4.5 hours depending on the wind.

Chris; How and when you cross depends on who is with you and what kind of ride you want. If you're a salty sailorboy, leave from Long Beach/San Pedro about 1000 hours and you'll get a good sail across, but it may be more intense than the First Mate would like. The wind comes up and you'll be beating into it, along with about four foot wind waves. It can be VERY wet. When I had my C-22 and the wife was going, we'd leave about 0700 and motor across. The sail back is the one most people like the best. If you like, e-mail me at svmoondance@hotmail.com and I'll provide additional advice.
