Apparently with the passage of the SOLAS Treaty a couple of years ago and with the development of DSC technology, the requirements for large ships to monitor Channel 16 VHF will expire in a few years. This got me thinking about smaller boats and sailboats in particular. Do you monitor Channel 16 when you are out on the water? Have you ever received a call for help and gone to the aid of another sailor? Have you ever requested help from another sailor over Channel 16 and received it? What's the story here?

chn 16

I always have radio tuned to 16 and sometimes I scan. Used 16 to contact ship entering St andrews bay today so I could avoid and turn out of his way. Don't have alot of room to play with. I got a nice reply and a run down on what he planed to do with thanks that we were not going to continue course that would but us dead on his bow.

Monitoring Channel 16

We just returned from a trip from Porto Rico to Norfolk and monitored channel 16 to look for large cargo and cruising ships. They all saw us on their radar and we were able to negotiate passage correctly exept for two ships; one spoke only Pakistanese or Hindu, all attemps failed and the second one was a chinese cargo and we went nuts trying to communicate when the captain on our boat remembered that one of our crew had studied cantonese; an hallucinating conversation followed and wonder of wonders I looked up and the cargo ship changed direction. Channel 16 still works but a few dictionaries would also help. Sincerely, Jean Hrab

channel 16 is sacred

I am totally pissed when people talk on 16. It is fantastic that this is a hailing freq.. and that sailors after hailing go to another channel.. I see this as sacred for the safety of all.. Regards, jim oursler

Ch 16 not a hailing channel anymore...

unless you are trying to reach the Coast Guard, or some other emergency. We are supposed to hail on channel 9 these days.

Channel 9 is scraped .....

Channel 9 has just been scraped a couple of months ago. All hailing is to be done on 16, then switch to a working channel. When cursing you should leave your VHF on 16. I fine to contact a ship, I get better information using channel 13 (Bridge to Bridge) so I use a dual watch of 16

That's a good way to get in trouble, Gordon

I don't think the FCC likes you to "curse" on any channel, not just 16. :) LaDonna

Ch 16 Vs Ch 9...

Heres the full story: On the east coast (don't know if it applies to West) the Coast Guard ceased its dual broadcasting on ch 16

Since when???

is channel 9 no longer a hailing channel? This is the first I've heard that. Just last summer I heard the Coast Guard telling Captains to use channel 9 for hailing other boats. Am I living a sheltered life!

Article on Sailnet

...about revised radio policy, dated 4/25/01. Basically says that the Coast Guard realizes that trying to get everyone to use channel 9 was a real flop of an idea, so they've decided to go back to the old system. http://www.sailnet.com/collections/news/index.cfm?newsid=sailne0492 (and linked below).

Do y'all use 9 for bridge opennings?

That seems to be the most common usage for channel 9 down here in Northeast Florida. Otherwise everyone just uses good old channel 16 to scream obsenities followed by the word "wake."
