I changed out the oil in my transmission on my 1984 Hunter 31. I have owned the boat for three years and there is no telling when the oil was last changes. Did not have any problems except for the fact that the dip stick is unreadable and there is only 1/4 inch difference between low level and full. Went to the store and bought some "pipe cleaners" to use as a test dip stick. When I was finally able to get a accurate reading I was about 2 inches over filled.

Pitman; If you overfill your transmission you may put too much pressure on the gears and cause them to fail. Check with a Yanmar mechanic to be sure. I over filled my tranny on my 84 H31 and the gears failled because of too much pressure from the oil, so my mechanic told me when he was fixing it. Mac

Dip Stick Aid
Reading the oil level on the Yanmar dipstick is next to impossible. I cleaned the dipstick with some stove alcohol and wrapped on a bit of masking tape so it hangs down a bit and check so it stays tight and won't fall off. Once the oil is up to the proper level remove the masking tape.

You always read the transmission dip stick placed on top of the threads but NOT screwed in. If you mesured with the stick screwed in, it could explain the low capacity of your transmission.

Tranny Fluid NOT Red for many
For the thousands with the Yanmar 2GM series, the transmission fluid is 30 weight oil, just like the oil used in the engine. It won't be red! Lovely "golden amber" perhaps when new, and black after it's been in there for the season.

I am not sure that I ever changed my transmission oil until about 2-3 years ago. Others had seviced the engine so I am not sure. I do know that the tranny had not been changed in about 3-4 year when it was changed last. The oil had discolored but is WAS NOT Black. I think there is something going on in your transmission if is in fact turning black.

The Easiest Way to Read ...................
the dip stick is to remove its shiny surface with 80 grit emery paper. The oil level is then easily read. Regards, s/v Island Hunter
