I bought new all rope halyards for my 1973 catalina 22. Will I have to change the sheaves at the top of the mast, and if so how hard of a job is it.Not much is in past forums to help out.I have my boat in a garage and havn`t really taken a good look at it,but a friend said the sheaves would have to be changed,so what did you do when you went to all rope? Thanks Ken

Masthead Sheaves

When I changed to all rope halyards on my C25, the replacement sheaves I ordered from Catalina Direct were somewhat inadequate so I used the existing wire rope sheaves which have worked quite well. Since sheaves are relatively inexpensive, I would investigate getting replacements for the rope halyards and as far as replacing the sheaves, it couldn't be any easier. Pull out the clevis pin and remove the sheave.

Masthead Sheaves

C/D has the replacement sheaves you need, you can only use 1/4" line. Cost is a whopping $9.00 for the four and it will take you about 15 minutes to change them out. Ken

Rope Haylards

several! lighter weight aloft, no more meat hooks, allows head sail to be fully dropped are just a few. Ken Palmer

My wire halyards jumped out

over and over and over and I got tired of it. Apparently the wire halyards are stronger than the sheave and eventually will jump out. The first time this happens a "divot" is made and the thing degrades from there. Rope is much easier on the sheaves than the wire would be...or at least that is the plan.
