I'm not talking about the number offerings to Neptune or the amount of champagne that must be drunk to change the name of our new-old h34. What I am asking is how you remove the old name and the name applied below that one. It appears as though they painted over the older name then applied the new name. It is very apparent because the letters are raised over the paint. There has to be a better way than just painting over the applique any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.

I removed my painted name with acetone on a rag a wiped it away, then took a buffer with rubbing compound a rubbed it out further. I could only see the old letters if the light was hitting it at the right angle, and then I knew what to look for. If you have vinyl letters under the painted on ones then try a heat gun and a a razor, the vinyl will come off with ease. I am no expert but it worked for me. Good luck!

if the name is painted on, the very best way to remove it quickly is with easy off oven cleaner and a rag........ it will nearly wipe off. BUT SPRAY THE RAG and wipe.... DO NOT SPRAY THE BOAT. it is forgiving, but ya still gotta be careful.

Are you sure the previous lettering was painted and not just vinyl stickers that have since been removed? Vinyl stickers will leave a raised area in the gelcoat if they have been on there for any length of time.. also, the gelcoat under the decals will be a different color than the surrounding weather exposed areas. These 'ghosts' are pretty much impossible to get rid of completely, short of sanding them down and putting on a new layer of gelcoat (or paint, whichever the case may be). This can be touchy, as Neptune can and will see the old name remnants and act accordingly! ;)

Cheers,
Brad

If the lettering is vinyl and has no wax covering it you can use "goo begone" as well.

John Vigor's renaming ceremony works for any type of previous naming material.
