I have just purchased a wonderful good old boat in the U.S.. As I am a Canadian citizen i must cancel the US registry and reister a new name in Canada. I was once told that sailboats do not appreciate having their name changed. Apparently there is a process that involves chanting incantations and pouring Rum or something that is effective in taming the wind or sea gods from acting up. I would like to organize a special boat christening ceremony with my family and friends. Does anyone know the the christening requirements to please the gods? Thanks for your help

renaming ceremony

Here is a link to the renaming rules and ceremony. Some people think it's a bunch of baloney, but, of course, you never hear from them again. http://www.48north.com/mr_offline/denaming.htm

Happy with our Renaming

We adapted John Vigor's ceremony quite successfully before lauching and have had numerous occasions where our good luck has held up where it could have gone south. Not having high end champagne didn't stop the ceremony, we simply chose the best (in name and taste) of the various beers in the cooler to pour over her bow. Magic Hat #9 won out over Corona. Rumor has it that the name being changed from just can't be a scorned woman, that you know of.

renaming

don't know if you are superisticious (sp) or not but let me tell you what happened to me. I bought a 340 out of state in January and splashed on March 13th, yes I changed the name, on May 14th was struck by lightning and totalled. Yes we were aboard no harm to us, we had not done the proper ceremony. I think Neptunes grace period for renaming is apparently 60 days, as on the 61st day he summoned my boat to its end. I will never rename another boat in this life. By the way you can see it on yachtworld right now, it is a 2000 Hunter 340 located in Oriental NC, listed as insurance salvage.

renaming ceremony

after purchase we renamed our boat to Liberty, I read and we were told that you sail outside the view of land, turn the boat in a complete circle and break the champaign bottle over the bow. We did and have had no ill effects. the rum shot poured over the side is to appease neptune when embarking on a journey.

Renaming

We did the renaming ceremony Captain Dave linked to, and three years later, Sorcerer's Apprentice (formerly Blue Chip) is still happily afloat.

Keep old name but have party anyway!

I bought my C30 " Dancin Bear" in the US last year and she is now an Albertan. Left the name the name the same. Only reason I would change if it was too personal. (Like the previous owners secret lovers name). Canadian registration is really a simple thing. There is a form you fill out at Customs house and they issue the number. In any case. I did have a party or two to bless my boat. Why not leave the name as is and invite us all to the party. Fair winds.
