Impeller gasket

Greg, The paper gasket does not need any sealer. In fact, if you use some, you will have a hard time scraping the pump surface when you realy don't want to (i.e. in a seaway when its rough). PS. Did you get my e-mail that I sent to you through the owner directory? I hav never used it and tried it. The e-mail was about a delivery. Let me know if it worked. Dave

I do put a little silicone grease designed for

this use on the new impellor to help it prime and protect the impellor till water gets to it.

Thanks Dave

That is what I have always done, however I was told I should use a sealer from someone at the yard that saw me installing my new impeller without sealer today. Did not get the e-mail from you....When was it sent? Greg

Shellac

I am replacing the gasket on the exhaust manifold, is there any opinion about using shellac to hold the gasket in place while placing the two part together. I have never used anything while replacing my water pump (small easy to handle pieces) but have in the past when attaching large awkard parts. I do not believe the shellac has anything to do with the gasket, meerly acting as an adhesive. The shellac in question is made for this purpose and was purchased in an auto parts store.

No sealant needed...

...when replacing a paper water pump gasket, however, I run a thin ring of liquid soap around the rim of the pump to hold the gasket aligned with the cover holes while I'm replacing the cover. FWIW, I also squirt some liquid soap into the impeller housing too which makes getting the new impeller in easier and gives it some initial lube when the engine starts and there is no water in there yet.

Raw water pump impellers

usually come with both paper gaskets and rubber O rings. Use either one, not both. The O ring should be lubed. I use VersaChem Anti Seize thread lube for all such applications. I think it is the same stuff as the winch lube I have. They are both super in wet locations.

O -Ring

I have found that the o ring works best and easy to install, never had a leak even if the impeller does not need to be replaced I use same o ring over and over again with nothing on it. nick

step by step process

Where can I get a step by step description to follow to change my impellor ? I have a sherwoodpump on a Catalina 30 (1989). I do not have the engine manual. I've read to be careful not to pull the center pin out with the impellor. Is this really an easy to thing to do? Thanks CM
