Changing the cutlass bearing

I have the stuffung box and the shaft removed,but I am not sure how to remove the cutlass bearing. The set screws are now lose. Do I have to put a pipe or cylinder into the bronze fitting and hammer the cutlass out. If that's the case, do I force it out from the cabin side or the propeller side.

I thought I had a good link for this subject

but not for removing the cutlass bearing. Only one on replacing the shaft and bearing which is below. To remove the old cutlass bearing many people seem to use a 3' threaded rod of say 3/4" to 1" diameter (depending on shaft size as all things do of course) and a bunch of bolts and washers of various sizes. You want to pull the old bearing out of the hull using a wrench to tighten a bolt on the outside so you washer up the inside bolt with wide enough washers to push the bearing out. Outside the hull you get a few inches of 2 - 3" diameter PVC pipe to build a base to pull from and the washers to cover it too. Pull it out gradually and not by beating it with a hammer. Picture Frankenstein with a bolt on either side of his neck (or was that Herman Munster?). I hope this description helps. The less destruction you do to the boat now, the less you will have to repair later. Some people also use Sawzalls on the bearing along with hammers but end up with a bit of a mess to clean up and repair. I dont think you could easily pound it out with a hammer from inside the hull or outside. Here is the link on Cutlass bearing replacement. Good luck with this project.

Cutlass Brg Replacement

We have recently replaced the cutlass brg on our rasmus. Due to the construction of the stern tube assembly it is not possible to insert a large diameter washer from the forward end of the tube to act as a puller pilot for the cutlass brg. The method we used was to make two cuts in the length of the cutlass brg ( 180 degrees apart ) from the rear of the stern tube being careful to cut thru only the bearing itself and not the stern tube. A tool can be made by trimming a hacksaw blade, then glueing the blade into a long, thin piece of wood or doweling with a groove or slot cut into it. This adds rigidity to the hachsaw blade add allows for a handle for easier handling and faster cutting. When you are very close to cutting thru the bearing its full length a few shape blows with hammer and punch thru the set screw hole will collapse the bearing enough to allow easy removal. Thanks to Ben Gendre

I followed Ben's advice and the cutlass bearing came loose. I cut two slits in the cutlass 180 degrees opposite and pryed the bearing. WE were then able to pound the cutlass out through the aft cabin. Thanks again to Ben,you were a great help.
