Changing the Centerboard Line on an O'Day 20

My 1978 O'Day 20 centerboard line is frayed, close to breaking and needs to be replaced. Can anyone take me through, in a simple, step by step format, exactly how to do change the line? I have never attempted this before and am a bit hisitant. The boat will be in a yard up on Jack Stands.Thanks!

My experience

I replaced the pendant on my 20 footer last spring. The rope on mine was dead ended directly into the rear edge of the CB. I cut the old line off and drilled a cross hole thru the CB. I attached a shackle to this with a 3-strand nylon line spliced around a thimble.Threading it thru the hull and tube can be a pain, but dropping a small weighted line (string) thru from the cockpit you can then attach the new line and pull it up thru the hull.Good luck with the project!Greg

changing wire

Hi, I did this last year on My 77' Mariner.(wich is now fr sale) I used a coated stainles lead. The CB has a hole close to the end of it so when it drops you will see it right away. I got a 2 screw clamp and ran the coated wire through the hole clamped it and I fished it from the top down. ( trunk has the hole) This is a 2 person job. It really needs to befully extended to get the correct length of the wire and then clamp it the same way to the wheel for uptake. Not a tough job but certainly a savings when the weith of the CG is being involved. Good Luck. There is plenty of room either side of the CB to accomodate the clamp. K
