I would like information on re-doing the windows on my Columbia 26 MArk II(1973). THe thing is, I DO want to keep the original aluminum extrusions that surround the old windows, and keep this to use again with my new material. Can you give me any hionts as to how to get out old, cracked and scratched windows while not destroying the original aluminum estrusion support. I've heard that a piano wire garrot (a piece of thin piano wire) will get between the extrusion and the bedding compund. Does this work? Can one buy new aluminum window extrusions should everything fail when I take out the old ones?

Have company name in Calif. if you are interested...will dig it up for you. I also found a company on the net from Canada which made alum. frames to order. Since my frames where no good, I cut thru them to remove the old windows, and the frames at the same time. The caulking does hold them tight to the hull, so it is going to be tough to get the frames off with minimal damage. Maybe use a sharp utility knife to slice away between the alum framd and the hull all around the window, but caulk might still be holding tight where the frame projects in towards the hull itself. It's not so hard, but you do need something hefty to get between the fiberglass and the frame. I tried an extracto knife with a long blade but that was two light. I purchased a flooring knife and ground the hook just a bit thiner and sharper. Remove all screws and use the knife and a screw driver as a pry bar. Worked fine. Also the curve of the knife lets you do the bottom edge.
