Changing raw water impeller, any tips?

I think this thread was bad luck for me today. Launched the boat no water pumping. Thru haul open, strainer clean, new impeller. Any ideas?
When you put the impeller in did you install paper gasket, plate, impeller, o-ring and then outer housing in that order?

I did it that order. Did a again to check it. I see no reason for the pump itself to be the problem. Now I'm wonder if something is blocking he water after the pump.

That's what I was about to say. Did you open both ends of your heat exchanger?

Also, are you sure your influent is clear?

Did you open the little valve and bleed air out once it was in the water? This valve is on top of the thermostat housing. You get air lock after changing the impeller and need to open this till water comes out. Run some more and do it again to burp the last of the air out

Impeller Vanes

Did you have all the impeller vanes on the old one when you pulled it out?

Probably need to systematically.
1. You can start at the strainer checking for water (pull inlet hose, open thru hull) - water comes out, you are good there.
2. If you are missing an impeller, I would next pull the inlet end off the heat exchanger and see if the impeller vane is there.
3. If no impeller vane is missing then I would pull off the inlet to the heat exchanger from the pump and see if you have water (may need someone else to start and immediately stop engine before you get too much water)
4. Next step (can't see it going much beyond that) would be to look at your exhaust elbow.

No connection. The rubber impeller is to move ocean water through the heat exchanger. The thermostat housing is on the coolant system. The pump for that system has a metal impeller that doesn't generally need replacement.

I was just thinking about the exhaust elbow side. The other thing is the muffler. I would drain that just to be sure that isn't filled with water. So I would add that as a step 5.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Probably won't get back to boat till Monday. No blades were missing from the old impeller so pulling hose from heat exchanger next to see if water is coming out, then I will move to the heat exchanger. I did install a new zink in the HE. Wonder if could be blocking flow?

If the muffler were full of water, wouldn't it be getting blown out with the exhaust or is there such a thing as too much water in it? I appreciate the help with problem solving.

Pretty sure you can have a water blockage because you won't have enough pressure to over come the water. Can you hear or see exhaust coming out at all?

How often do you change the zinc?

Regular exhaust was coming out but no water. Could tell instantly by the sound difference. I always look but first time in all my boating years to hear it without water mixed in. My dock is so close to the ramp the engine didn't even start to warm up.

First time I changed the zink. Being in fresh water makes a big difference. Probably could of left the old one in.

Not the zinc

If anything those tend to just fall apart and sit in the bottom of the heat exchanger. Just not big enough to cause a flow problem.

Another question while working on my current problem. I can see some one has worked on the cooling system in the past. Both incoming and out going hoses on the water pump go out and around the fan belt. Which force me to remove the hoses or he impeller housing to change the fan belt. Any one else have the same or do our hoses run behind the fan belt?

You can run the effluent under/behind the alternator but the influent is always on the outside of the belt.

Mine has a funky curve due to a mistake when ordering the replacement pump but you can see it heading next to the alternator.

Wow! You really have that motor looking great!
Thanks. Took all winter to pull it apart, wire brush it, decrease it, paint it and put it back together. I am going to bleed the fuel and antifreeze this am and hopefully take her for a short trip this afternoon.

Today I remounted the water pump after checking it to make sure the new impeller had not been damaged or spun on the shaft. Only other thing I did was remove the new zinc and put the old one back in after cleaning it up a bit on the grinder. It is pumping water like a champ. So maybe the new zinc which seemed a bit tight was to long and to much diameter. There is an exit very close to it on my heat exchanger.

I have never taken a heat exchanger apart (maybe the only thing I haven't) so not sure if that's a possibility. We have owned the boat since 2007 and a least back that far we haven't lost any impeller blades into the system. My wife says to leave it alone!

Heat Exchanger no big deal

On either end there is a bolt. Just unscrew it and the end comes off. On the side where the zinc is you may find pieces of zinc that have broken off. On the other (port side) is where you would find the impeller vanes.

Compass Marine's site has pictures of what you are describing. I see what you mean so I will have to pull the end off and see what it looks like in there.
