Can props be changed while the boat remains in the water? I dinged my prop with the anchor{long, stupid story}and wanted to have the prop removed, straightened and replaced with out hauling the boat out. Is it an easy task for a diver? Is it common or do most wait till the haul-out? It's not that badly dinged. thanks, Jack

A diver can do it. You can do it if you remember to tie a line onto one of the blades so it can't escape into Davy Jones Locker. Some props require a puller but I have found that a rap with a wood mallet near the base of the blades also does the trick to free it up.

They can do it!

Jack: A diver can do it. They would probably use a puller to get it off the shaft. The only problem may be corrosion, but it can be done.

Consider a short haul

Price a short haul as well. In colder climates the marinas are busy hauling boats for the winter and wont cut you any breaks. But in warmer places they may be willing to lift it out and keep it in the travel lift long enough for you to switch props. Based on what some of the divers charge in my area it could possibly be a cheaper alternative. You'd also get it power washed as well as part of the deal.

Yes, it's done on a regular basis.

Contact Dave at Bay Area Diving for a quote at 813-294-0250. I had my prop removed, sand blasted and painted about two years ago for $100. I don't know if they do the straightening of the prop themselves or if he farms it out, but they can get it done. Places to haul out boats down here are disapearing fast.
