I just recently purchased my first inboard diesel engine with my Hunter 27 (77) sailboat. I would like to know the best way to change the oil. I heard somewhere that you should pump the oil out through the dip stick....well its the size I can't figure out. How the heck do you get a tube down such a small hole...or do I just find a drain plug below and go for it. I am in dry dock right now and don't care if I make a mess. Thanks,

Connect a rubber tube that slides over the outside of the tube and clamp it. Then suction the oil out. When I first bought my boat I removed the oil pan and installed a drain plug the same as cars use. It's been an easy job ever since. I will never understand why they just don't put drain plugs in these engines to begin with. Every car and truck has one.

1 GM 6.5 HP Yanmars have a drain plug

and in the H27 Cherubini there is enough space under the pan to insert a collector. If yours is a re-powered boat and has no drain plug the alternative would be to suck it out the dip-stick hole. West marine sells a hand pump with hoses and a thin plastic tube that goes inside all the way down to the pan. Get a one liter bottle to pump the oil out into. The engine should be warm but not hot enough for the oil to melt the plastic tube.
