We are changing out the halyards of our Hunter 235 we just purchased this year. The one was a little frayed and we were a little concerned out it. Plus, they are really dirty. I understand the mechanics of having to cut the shackle off and "sew" the new line onto the end of the cut, BUT, what is the best material to use to sew the two together? Trilene fishing line? heavy duty nylon tread? What the best way to secure the two together. I am have really leary of doing this but it needs done. Any suggestions out there?? Best to have the mast up? down?

Credit to Steve Dion for a technique I have used several times. Make a double fish hook out of a paperclip. Get each end under several fibers of each line. Wrap with tape and pull away.

If you pull a messenger line through first then you don't have to cut off any shackles. Just in case you want to save it as a backup.

I didn't even sew mine together. Just put the end of the new line inside of the old halyards outer sheath and wrapped it tightly with rigging tape. I put dishwashing soap on the joint and pulled them through. The mast was down which made it easy for us. If the mast was up I would have sewn them probably.

Thanks for the suggestions! Didn't have any clips. Sewed the ends and just put a little electrical tape around it. Scared me to death to do it but it's done.
