Changing Depth transducer

I have to change out my Raymarine ST50 depth transducer with an ST60. I looks like I have to just screw the old one out and screw the new one in. Not sure of how easy it will be to twist the old one out. There is no where to place a pair of pliers on it. I may have to use a channel locks. Any suggestions on loosing up the old sealant? What sealant do you use on the new transducer? How long before you can put the boat back in the water. Thanks for the info.

It should come out easy

Use either Life Caul or Life Seal. One of those is meant for below the waterline, but I never can remember which is which. Check the package.

Not Always Easy

When I took out my old transducer two years ago it was a real bear to remove. We fashioned a wooden peg the size of the transducer and stood on it from inside the boat and pried on it from out side the boat. Once it was out, instalation of the new on was straight forward. Stretch a strong wire...

...tight between 2 handles and use a sawing motion around the flange on the outside of the hull. That will help break the seal. All you will be fighting from there is the sealant in the hole.

Mine was a bi...h

Because I used 5200 figuring I'll never have to remove it but it went bad and even after using 5200 debond it still wouldn't budge I ended up going outside and drawing an X on the face of the trandsducer to find center and using a hole saw one size smaller than the original hole and after it came out I was able to remove whatever leftover 5200 around the edge and even that was tough.

Is the transducer bad?

Pat: Is the transducer bad? We used the ST50 transducers on our ST60 instruments and they work fine.

Steve, the ST50 is good but

I can not get it to work with the ST60 display. I have hooked the old St50 display up and it works. Raymarine also says it should work as you say but I am dumbfounded why I can not get it to work. To check my new ST60 display I have hooked up the ST60 transducer and hung it over the side and it works. So I figure I have no other choice but to use the newer tranducer. Could it be because my crimped connections are not good enough after I had to cut the old transducer wire at the helm? Should they be soldered too? I sure would like to get it to work because I am looking at $400 plus to haul the boat out of the water to change this transducer out. Thanks .

Pat I cannot remember, but I thought there was ....

Pat: I cannot remember, but I thought that there was something that I needed to do. I purchased new ST60 displays and hooked up the existing transducers (speed & depth) to my ST60 Tridata. I am wondering if there is a problem with the wire colors on your old transducer vs the new one. If I remember I will try looking at my stuff this weekend and try getting back to you.

Life Caulk

Life Caulk is OK for underwater use but is not recommended for use on plastics as most transducers are these days. I would not use a polysulfide, like Life Caulk or 3M 101, on a plastic transducer. Plus the cure time on polysulfides is quite long! You can instead use 3M 4200 or Sikaflex 291. Why are you replacing the transducer? Many times the old transducer will work fine with the new head especially if it's within the same brand. Call Raymarine and ask them if your ST60 head will work with your ST50 t-ducer. Unfortunately, they don not just unscrew from the hull and there is a very good possibility it was put in using 3M 5200. It could be very difficult to remove..

Thanks Main Sail & Steve D.

I'll get a tube of 4200 for when/if I have to haul out. Already have been in contact with Raymarine. I gave them the whole story (see my reply #6) and they have given up on me and I on them. I have more faith in the folks on this site. I am still hoping Steve may be on to something. I will try and run the leads differently this week-end. There are 3 wires so not many combinations to try. Thank-you.

Got the darn thing to work !!!!!!

In review: the ST50 system required only 2 wires coming from the transducer even though 3 wires were available. Raymarine said to use 3 wires for the new ST60 display - there places to attach all 3 wires. It did not work. I tried switching the wires around to experiment. There are 6 possible combinations. None of them worked. So for the hell of it I used only the 2 wires used for the old hook up and it now works. I left off the screen (bare) wire which was also left off on the old ST50 display. Go figure.
