Changing Coolant

I'm trying to figure out how to change the coolant in my Volvo-Penta. I can't see any obvious drain valves. There are low points where it looks like I could pull off a hose, but then I think I'd get coolant in the bilge. Thanks for any advice.

Which engine model?

If it is the MD22L, I might be able to help. I seem to recall that there is a petcock on the side of the block to which I attached a length of tubing to reach into a bucket. If this is your engine, advise, and I will go through my notes and repost more details.

It's a 2000 series

It's the Volvo-Penta 2000 Series (2002 is the actual model). It's in a 1990 Beneteau 350. I would assume there would be some drain valve, but the manual I have has nothing about changing coolant.

On the Volvo website.....

they offer a download of the owner's manual. It may be the same one that you already have- it is about 24 pages long. See the attached link for the publication search for your engine. On page 7, in picture block 22, item 4 is the drain for the block. It isn't clear exactly where on the block this is located, but a bit of time with a flashlight should show an item that looks like the picture. The manual does have very brief info on draining the fresh water system. I have a petcock similiar to the one pictured and I was successful in draining my MD22L. Good luck.

Coolant Change

I have a Volvo MD2030 (3 cylinder - 29 HP) engine. On my engine, there is a square drain plug on the starboard side of the block near the oil filter (although my owner's manual shows a petcock). All of the other "bolt heads" are hexagonal. This was the only square headed bolt or plug. There was no where (or good way) to drain this, so I just directed the flow into the sump under the engine. I then used a shop vac to suck up the fluid, after which I tranferred it to a jug for later disposal at a recycling facility. Then I flushed the engine with fresh water and "sucked this up" as well. That water was quite clear, so I dumped this down the sanitary sewer system. Hope this helps, Tom
