Changing antifreeze

After five seasons I am thinking of changing the Havoline extended antifreeze in my M25 on my 1983 Catalina 30. When I did it 5 years ago I recall having trouble removing air after the change. I believe I finally found and printed a series of steps to follow to remove all the trapped air. I can't find it in the archives or on the Catalina 30 web site. If I slowly drain from the petcock on the block and fill thru the plastic expansion tank simultaneously with the pressure cap off on the engine would this work so I don't introduce air?

Antifreeze

Nothing in life is easy. Remember you also have the antifreeze running through the fresh water heater and returning to the engine. I also seem to remember that some types of antifreeze do not mix and can create small solids if mixed. Remember, antifreeze does several things. It raises the boiling point. Lowers the freezing point. Creates greater heat conduction. lubricates the water pump. Protects and conditions any seals. Prevents corrosion of metal parts. Good luck. SH

Thanks, you really know your stuff and are very helpful. I have to ask about the 3/8" hose off the bottom of the two connections to the thermostat you say to remove. I don't follow the part where you then say to pour fluid into that 3/8" hose. How can I do that if I remove the hose? I'm not clear on this. I recall the last time I did this I did a lot of "burping" and didn't like it and didn't want to use the engine for fear of overheating. Thank you again, John

Stu, I'll know for next time...

I changed my antifreeze a month ago. I opened the radiator cap and pumped that portion out with the hand pump. To drain the remainder, I removed the drain plug from the side of the manifold and used a shop vac to suck the drained contents from the bilge...not to bad of a job, just not as neat nad clean as your method. Thanks for sharing.
