I want to change my Johnson 9.9's prop to a lower pitched one to give more power in reverse. How difficult is it? It seems I may have to buy a rather expensive prop wrench and perhaps other special equipment (a special prop puller?), so maybe I should have it professionally done. Help, please! Many thanks.

Free Installation

I bought a new low pitch prop and the shop tech had the old one off and the new one on before the counter clerk could print the reciept. No charge.

Nut and pin

On my Evinrude 9.9 (1978 vintage) the prop is held on with a castlated nut (a nut with ridges on one side) that has a pin through the nut and shaft. The pin is bent back over the nut so neither back out. Just unbend and remove the pin, unscrew the nut, and pull off the prop. Really easy. Always use a new pin when reinstalling.

Wrench rarely needed,

it's common to pull the prop before every season on big outboards to clear all the fishing line wrapped on propshaft before it cuts the seal. The propshaft is usually tapered and then a nylon "thrust" washer under nut, as the nut is tightened it presses the prop forward against the taper. It is practice to lightly coat the taper section with grease so prop will not bind and stick on prop shaft. Prop Puller is a gear puller configured to fit a prop. Most times you can pull them right off, sometimes if they stick a gentle tap to a 2x4 placed on front of blades is enough to break it free.
