Hello,

is anyone experienced in changing a volvo with combi-prop to a volvo
with gearbox? What do I have to regard?

Do you think there are big advantages?

Thanks for each information!

Kind regards

Michael

Hi Michael

You need a Volvo MS2 gearbox with the correct flange attachments to connect to the existing engine. Some fibreglass work is needed then you will need a new propshaft and prop and control cables and control lever. Three or four have been converted in teh UK usually at a cost of about £700 - £1000. Quite a bit of work but worth the effort if you can get hold of the correct gearbox cheaply.

Kind Regards

Hello Michael, I had my Albin petrol + adjustable prop changed by a shipyard
to a Volvo MD2010 (10 HP) with gearbox, water-lubricated shaft and fixed
prop.
There was quite a lot of work (and thus money...) involved as -for example-
motor bearings need to be exchanged, the shaft & bearings are glassed in
etc.

I think it was worth it, the Vega is now better controllable: with a good
kick astern it stops dead. This means that I can manoeuvre at higher speed
(kicking the boat around) giving more confidence. I seem to have more motor
power as well but that might be subjective.

P.S. If you consider changing the entire motor installation, motor, gearbox,
shaft, prop etc. have a look at Steve Birch's (Vega-club UK) packet with the
Beta diesel. The Beta is a real nice "proper" marine engine.
Best regards,
Hielke
