WHAT DOES EVERYONE THINK ABOUT CHANGING AN 87 FIN KEEL WITH AN 88 WING? I HAVE AN 87 FIN KEEL IN GREAT SHAPE BUT IT IS JUST TO DEEP FOR WHAT I WANT TO DO ON THE LAKE. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF IT IS POSSIBLE AND AROUND WHAT IT WOULD COST? THANKS FOR THE HELP.

Keel Transplant

I have an aquantance who did this on his 30 around 10 years ago. The only thing that made the deal for him was finding another 30 which wanted to go from wing to deep. They swapped keels, but with labor and transportation, it still cost several thousand then. Buying a new keel was way higher. Unless you fall into a deal, the best advice is to sell your boat and buy another. It will be cheaper to swap boats rather than keels.

Keel

Marsmetals will make a new keel for your boat. I am going to have them make a shorter keel for my C38 as the current 6'9" draft which is great for The Great Lakes, is too deep to take to the Caribbean. Gene is right about the expence though. It is not a cheap fix, but you end up with a keel that in my opinion is better than a winged keel. Craig Steinkraus "Wings" C38 #250

wing keel

Ask the factory, I think the wing is about 3 grand plus shipping. Bet you might have to move the engine to remove the keelbolt under. I have this in the back of my mind too, but decided to wait for a wing keeled 30' when I can afford it in about 10 years!
