Anyone out there made changes to the outhaul system on the 260? I want to change it so that I can tighten or loosen the outhaul from the helm. Any suggestions will be appreciated. :)

In the process

I am in the process of adding jiffy reefing, cunningham and outhaul control led to the cockpit. The outhaul line will run to a block at the base of the mast, then to a quad line organizer ( as opposed to the double that is standard on the the 260) and then back to the cockpit. I already have a solid garhauer vang led to the cockpit.

On my 235

I'm thinking of putting the outhaul right there on the end of the boom. It seems silly to have the line run all the way forward and then all the way back. Is there any reason why I shouldn't just have it right over head on the boom?

Take John Scharer's advice which I agree with him. Hello John. Let me know how you are doing and I will tell you my e mail. Crazy Dave Condon

Out haul, et al...

Frank, to answer your question about putting the outhaul at the aft end of the boom... It will be difficult to reach under sail. You don't want to be hanging out over the side wrestling the thing or trying to tackle the boom with a luffing sail. My old MAC 26 had it setup that way and it was difficult to deal with at times. As far as running it back to the cockpit, I don't change the outhaul that often to make it too inconvenient to go to the mast base to adjust it. I'll relax it a bit in light air, and tighten it in heavier air. I do try to remember to loosen it after sailing to take the stress off -- and then to tighten back up, before sailing next time. Its the first thing I check when my mainsail is out of shape -- whoops, forgot to tighten the outhaul! I added a rigid vang and did run that control to the cockpit. I converted what was the in boom topping lift control line to my outhaul line, and what was the outhaul line hardware was then employed to run a 2nd reef line. Works fantastic. The only addition was an eye strap to terminate the 2nd reef line on the boom (and, of course the reef points in the sail). Fair winds, Tom

Quad

I put a quad organizer on my like John is doing. I use it for the solid vang, main halyard and single line reefing at this point. You could easily run the outhaul line down also, but we have found we get much more use out of the single line reefing. Makes for quick changes while racing as we often pull the reef out just before turning downwind and put it back in after rounding the leward mark on windy days. Jeff Peltier

Jeff, question for you

Jeff - Can you provide detailed info on your single line reefing? That's something that I want to add to my H26. Thanks, Ron Mehringer s/v Hydro-Therapy

block configuration

I added a couple of single blocks to the base of the mast.I tried a double, but it would bind because of the uneven tension while reefing. For the clew and tack of the reef, I used a shackle and a single block. On my sail, this also gives me just enough clearance so the sail slug from below the reef doesn't bind. Then with the quad turning block, I run the reefing line back to the cockpit, right next to the main halyard to make it easy for one person. Jeff Peltier
