I want to change the name on my Mac26. I am not a superstitous man but after all I have read and all I have heard from my wife, it soundsa as though I better feel out other sailors on this topic. Any particular rituals or what not would be greatly appreceiated. Thanks, Stu

superstition

was common back when many things about the world were unknown and thus, more out of a sailor's control. So if you put into the "hands" of other things it would make you feel like you were more in control. I have heard that sailor's use to think it was bad luck if a woman was on the boat, or even if a barefoot woman was sighted on the way to the boat...it was thought it would anger the seas. Yet, a wooden woman on the bow was thought to appease the seas. If you are not superstitious, then it shouldn't bother you. I'd change the name to what you want.

God vs gods

Well do you believe in God or gods. If you beleive in God you can not be superstitous. I took the old name off and put the new on, on two different boats and no sea monster has eaten me yet. Having said that a small ceremony where drinking is involved could always be a lot of fun. Just keep it in perspective.

Keith, They made a movie called

"Children of a Lesser God". Sometimes the matter at hand may be of no concern to "GOD" so the "lesser gods" can range freely. It makes no sense to ignore them.;)

This will help!

Hi Stuart, here is a link to a denaming as well as a renaming ceremony. Please don't take this lightly. My friend did not do the denaming ceremony. He went out on his first sail...three nymphomaniacs took him hostage, went out in the deepest part of the ocean, through all the clothes overboard...well lets just say it totally messed up his sailing plans! Good luck with your boat Stuart! Jack

Renaming

your boat has very little to do with your religious beliefs--IMO. But there are thousands of years of sea-tradition to be observed. We have named two boats to date. The party that went along with the ceremony was a great time to see our friends and family and to share some drink and eats with them. We will name a third boat this year and will have another party. Follow the suggestions in the 48 Degree article referenced above. Have a good time. The seriousness of it has to do with tradition.

Champagne and love

Get a bottle of champagne, some good stuff. Rename the boat and then down the bubbly and slip into the cabin for some marital celebration!

But it is tradition

and a good excuse to have a party. Course finding a virgin to pee on the bow is kinda hard as most parents will not let their daughters participate in such stuff (that is actually a good thing I think). One thing that is not well documented, does she have to pee ON the bow or ON the deck near the bow. Everything I've read says ON the bow. The hydraulics for such and act would be interisting to say the least.

Good champagne is a MUST

We purchased our Catalina 30 in March and delivered her last weekend. On Friday the crew, my first mate and I had the de-renaming ceremony using a bottle of chapagne supplied by the previous owner at the time of sale. The cork split and the bubbly was flat and sour! During our 18 hour trip all 47 gallons of fresh water from my tanks leaked into the bottom of the boat, we lost one crew member to incapacitating sea sickness amd the chain and cable in my steering separated in 15 foot seas (that were only forecast to be 4-7)forcing us to use the emergency tiller. I think the gods were getting pay backs for the @$!# we served them the previous night!! I could imagine what would have happened if we didn't even do the ceremony!

Keep Your Blue Cross Card Handy

Tread carefully. Several years ago I renamed a boat we kept at a marina at Rock Hall, MD. After a painful night on board, I needed an emergency appendectomy at the hospital in Centerville the next morning. Coincidence? Rathful retribution? I'd point out that I had never had a problem with my appendix before that....or since. - Good luck.

Name Change

Check out the Latitude 38 magazine. They have had several articles on the 'required' superstituous-quelling sailors ceremony for name changing. It's quite entertaining! Good luck! Sue
