I scanned this full scale drawing I bought from Alden years ago. It may be nice to get more of these original drawings scanned and filed here. If we can get enough, a separate thread might be useful. Any ideas on how to do this and get a better result?
I had to do it in three sections, import it into my CAD program and then fudge them together.
I've seen this original configuration, at least closer to this, on other Challengers. The drawing is dated 1958. The biggest differences seem to be in the galley/nav area. I don't think my boat ever had the hanging locker to starboard, I believe it was always full countertop in that area with a large dry locker.
It's a little hard to read but I used it as a scale model to redraw my boats layout a few years ago.This helped in some minor modifications, such as cutting down the centerline table in the past. Also, during a repower done in 1974, the galley was changed a bit. The ladder was moved forward for engine clearance. A slanted panel was added to port to accomodate the engine and systems as well. The original cooker must have been wider as the space is oversized. As I installed another engine last winter and changed it's set up somewhat, I plan to redo this area now that I have more space. Here are the proposed changes;
As the countertop after nearly 50 years is showing it's age, I thought it a good time to change it's size. I plan to extend it forward now 3". This will eliminate the slanted piece installed in 74 and allow a more stout cabinet facade to be built. It'll be removable in one piece and house a garbage hopper and drawer in the added volume created. I'll retain a deep toe space below so essentially, I won't be changing the area for working. The sink can then be moved forward eliminating the leaning over situation now. We use all the countertop area underway and at anchor. This will create more work space, much of it outboard and aft but useable. I would like to fit this counter in two pieces, both reasonably easy to remove for systems work and a much needed future rebuild of the ice box.
As to the settee arrangement to starboard, I drew this a while back. I think I may do it in the future. A very comfortable cabin now, this "couch" type of arrangement might be an improvement when just two are onboard for a length of time. Any easy redo; take out the pilot berth/drawer cabinetry for later re-installation when desired. The water tank stays as does the slide out settee for a large berth. The cushions could be formed as drawn in sections, and made to fasten/unfasten from the backs. Books shelves added above and outboard. Little volume would be lost for storage as cave lockers would be created behind the backs.
For now, we're still sailing as a family of four and I haven't the heart to do it. The pilot is my daughters berth and I see her sleeping there.
