I have recently purchased a chair hammock. My intent is to hang it on the forestay (I do not have roller furling). I weigh 225 pounds. Is there a possiblity of causing damage to the rigging?

Chair Hammock

Calvin, We have a chair hammock on our 335. We hang it from our spinnaker halyard with a tie off from the forestay to keep it away from the mast. This works very well for the mate and it is HER chair. Then again she only weighs about 125 pounds. You might give that arrangement a try. Hope this helps. Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

What about a regular hammock ?

While we are on the subject does anyone have any experience with a regular hammock ? I have a hunter 34 and imagine I would string it between the forestay and the mast. I have no idea how but would appreciate any input. Thanks

Caution

Use caution when stringing a regular hammock to the forestay. The stay normally carries load along its length. Loads it and the hardware it attaches to were designed for. Attaching a line to the stay and applying load perpendicular to the stay actually produces a tricky sort of mechanical advantage. So if the hammock line has X pounds of tension, it will produce many times X of tension on the stay and the fittings to which the stay is attached. I ran one end of a backyard hammock over a wood A-frame and then to a very large tent stake in the ground. Seems I couldn't find a stake that the hammock line was not capable of bending. The geometry is a little different in this situation, but it still shows how the loads can be much bigger than you think. Personally, I really want a hammock on my H26, so when I come up with a solution I'll post it. Ron Mehringer s/v Hydro-Therapy
