chainplate issues

The chainplate for my forestay is pulling out. It is very strange the vertical plate that is below and welded to the anchor roller is pulled forward. No cracks, just pulled out. When I check the other side of it, which is in the anchor well, there are no bolts or backing plate there. Never noticed if one had been there. Does anyone have a similar model and can tell me what it is supposed to look like.
The boat has sailed fine for years.

From my experience Hunter usually uses aluminum plates glassed into the boat during construction rather than a backing plate. These plates are often drilled and threaded. Did you try to tighten the bolts up to see if the chainplate was pulled back into position ? Most of the owners manuals have a diagram showing the location of each plate in the boat as some would only be used to mount optional equipment later by the owner or dealer.
This piece in the picture runs down the stem of the bow correct ? Could this have been done with the anchor windlass ? You may have to use longer bolts and a backing plate if the threads are gone in the original aluminum plate.

Flying an A Spinnaker?

Are you flying an asymmetrical spinnaker ffrom the anchor platform, by chance? The reason I ask is that someone I know was and noticed the platform pulling up from the deck (after a couple of thousand miles of ocean sailing). They resolved that by a bobstay. Anyhow, I would be inclined to put a wrench on it and see if it will snug down. I agree, there may be an embedded plate that the bolt(s) threads through. You could certainly have a backing plate machined, but I would try snugging it down first. A contact with Hunter may yield some info too. Let us know how this works out.

I have 2007 H-36 and agree that should be a backing plate
inside the fiberglass and on my boat no backing plate on the inside
of the anchor locker.
Some how something caused the bolts to pull out,if it was my boat
I would remove those bolts in that vertical stainless plate below the
anchor roller and clean away any pulled fiberglass and than get a new long backing plate made of heavy stainless and thru bolt it back in place.
Also see what was causing it to pull out if you can.

If there was an aluminum plate in the hull, there is no way you'd strip the threads out by upward force..
The material Hunter uses for their embedded plates is 6061 3/8". No way you can yank a screw out of it.
The length of the screws suggests however that there should have been a backing plate.
Here us what I suspect happened
They forgot to laminate in the plate.
When Hunter installs these plates, they then still and tap through the glass with an electric drill with tapping head.
I sorta suspect the glass has been holding these screws.
You would be amazed of the holding power of 5/16 coarse threads in glass.
You need an internal backing plate & longer screws. Do this like tomorrow.

Hi,

Thanks for all your posts. They were extremely helpful. I spoke to my dealer and he did think someone had perhaps screwed up the installation - perhaps by overdrilling the holes. The fix does seem to be adding a backplate and longer bolts. I will let you know what happens.
