Chain to shain splice

Did some research but wanted to get a second opinion. I have a Hunter 420 Passage. I would like to add more anchor chain to my existing. Besides welding, does anyone have experience here. Would have to go through windlass. Was thinking about this option.

I use one of these connecting links. They do require replacement every few years because they seem to rust quicker. Be sure the one you buy is made in the USA. The trick to attaching is to use an anvil or a heavy metal block as a backing plate. hit the pins with a 16 oz hammer many times. Don't try to mash it over with just a couple whacks. If I remember correctly, I think you go up one size from your chain to achieve the same breaking strength and working load. Check the size on a piece of chain like yours in the store. Mine goes through the windlass just fine.

If you have no windlass repair links will work. But if you do use a windlass these links will often hang up and jamb in the gypsy.

Welding is effective but one cannot ever know whether the welded link is strong enough since the heat will alter things. Also coating a welded link with paint or cold zinc is not very reliable.

Probably the best solution is sell the old chain at the resale shop and purchase one length of new chain.

I'd have to agree with Charles. Mainesail has some pretty impressive pics of 'soft link' failures on his site. If you do go with one, I'd get one from a chain distributor, not WM. Totally different quality and probably properly sized for a BBB gypsy.

Get a new rode with the required length chain, and transfer your existing rode to your #2 anchor. You do have a #2 right?

Thanks for the input. I think for safety and peace of mind, I am just going to replace the old tackle. Going to go all chain since the days of racing around the bay in our trusty 336 are over with the new boat.
And yep Gunni, I have a spare anchor although you mentioned required length. I know what desired, or recommended length is. Can you expand on your comment? Did I miss a regulation?

No regulation, just what length works for your sailing ground anchorages. I go with enough rode to get 10:1 scope. Like that you are going all chain for your new boat. My #2 rode is a chain/rope combo, make's it easier to stow, and lighter in the bow.
