recently installed 150' chain rode with 150' of nylon. My question is how to mark the chain for depth. Whatever I do needs to fit thru the windlass. What are your suggestions?

paint it with a code?

use multiple colors of paint based on a 10 foot spread. 1 link is 10 ft two links are 20 ft. etc.

Plastic pull ties also work well.

Paint works well but my being colorblind caused the need for a different system. We had 300 feet of chain with 200 additional nylon. I used plastic pull ties every 20 feet with a coat of very bright paint covering 1 foot of chain or line where the ties were attached to make it very visable. I changed color every 100 feet. Whatever you do it is a good idea to write your codeing system down in the boat log and attach or store a copy with the anchor gear. Ray

I used 1" dacron webbing marked in feet with a permanent marker

and sewn on by hand every 30' on my 330 ' of chain (30', 60', 90', 120', etc). That way each mark gave me a 5:1 scope to the depth in fathoms, or if i lost count, I could just read the mark. On the same link as the first mark you can add one cable tie, and add an additional tie on each subsequent mark so you can count the marks in the dark (or in the daytime if the mark comes up covered in mud). The reason I don't use paint is; I intend to end for end the chain, when one end begins to lose its galvanize.

I laid out my chain on the dock

in twenty-five foot loops and painted the ends of the loops. Worked well, but next time I'll use yellow instead of white

Anchor Chain Depth Markers

I attach groups of the same coloured plastic cable or zip ties at 25 foot depths up to 150 feet. I also have marked a legend on the inside of the anchor locker door the colour corresponding to each depth. After a while one or two zip ties fall off and once a year I replace them. Works for me.

I like the zip ties

I use and like the zip ties. Since I am also one of those who are color challenged, different colors don't work too well for me. I just use one every 25 feet. Even when it's pitch black outside, you can feel and count them as they go out.
