Can anyone give me some feed back on the chain plates on the Oday 22. I am looking at a 1982 Oday 22, and noticed that the Deck gave a little when I pulled on the standing rigging, I did use a good amount of weight (I weight 200lbs and leaned away from the standing rigging). Durning the test sail, the boat seemmed to sail well in a 12 knot breeze. If this is not normal, can I reinforce the chain plates with a stainless steel 4"x4" backing plate to correct the issue. Any feed back on the Oday would also be great. EJ Tews

EJ - The O'day 22 is a great little boat. People tend to find them a bit better built than Catalinas of the same vintage, though they're heavier so a bit slower. Of course, its all relative anyway. Pull hard enough on anything and it will give, but you do want to have those decks checked where the chainplates were moving. The force you were exerting was enormous because of the leverage pulling perpendicularly on a line give you, but still . . . What you are probably going to discover is that there has been water into the core near the chainplates. This is not terminal, though I may be cost prohibitive if you have someone else do the repair. On the other hand, a few hours with the internet and a book or two and you'll be set to repair it yourself, at what will probably be a low price. Then, as you suggest, I would increase the load bearing area by putting a bigger backing plate under there. If this is going to be your first boat, I would really suggest a survey. It may be a significant amount of the price of an O-22 but it will teach you a great deal about the way boats are made and of course about this boat in particular. At the least, try and get someone who knows boats to go and look at it with you. I'd volunteer but its a long drive from Maine. Good luck Justin - O'day Onwers' Web

Thanks

Thank you Justin for the information. I have already contacted a marine Surveyor and the price of the survey is something I am OK with. I understand about the weight issue. I am sure I can fix the problem of the chain plates. The O'day sound like a good boat and there is plenty of people around to ask questions. If you decide to visit us in Texas, give us a call. EJT

Hi EJ! I've owned a '73 O'Day 22 for the past 22 years. About two years ago, my starboard side deck at the chain plate became spongy. I drilled several holes in the area and filled the cored deck with epoxy (under pressure). So far, so good. Before the deck became spongy, I lost the lower starboard stay on a broad quarter reach in 15 knot winds. Fortunately, the mast stayed up. I weigh about 260lbs. The deck is OK now but I still feel some give when I walk on that area. However, it only cost a few bucks and little time. Don Paul
