I have a 4 yearold 42 MarkII that is leaking rust between the deck and the chain plate bracket. In addition I have noticed the leak starting to come in the overhead of the solon. How serious is this problem ? How soon should I start repair to clean, repair or replace/ reseal the chain plate. Is the chain plate one unit or several Is this a major job ? Advise please

You Could be De-masted

Hi (you didn't give your name): You have a major problem that needs fixing right away. The previous owner of my Catalina 27 was demasted because of a failed chainplate. I've never changed one myself, so I can't tell you how. I understand they should be checked every two years or so. And any leak should be thoroughly inspected and repaired right away. Are you real familiar with the materials that make up your boat? The worst thing is if moisture gets into the wood that is in your hull, then rots it. That's why you should repair any leak immediately if not sooner. Now get to it! <g> Melody
