I am the new owner of an older boat, a 1982 Catalina 22. After a good old midwestern 5 day rain, I made it out to continue my projects. After the rain, I found I had a new project, I found that my windows leaked and one of the shroud chain plate bolts leaked.
My main concern was the chain plate, fearing deck rot I pulled the chain plate to check. I marked the angle of the bolt so I could line it up properly when reinstalling. From what I could tell there was no damage nor rot in the deck. I cleaned the parts, ran some apoxy around the through hole, applied a liberal amount of 3M Marine sealant and put it together again.
The thought then occured to me to check the other chain plate bolts and what I noticed was they were not uniform in how they align with the mast. The one I refit was around 45 degrees off the center of the boat (bow to stern). The center on the starboard side was parallel with the boat, the center on the port side was perpendicular tothe mast, or, 90 degrees off of the starboard side bolt.
Getting to my question now. At what angle should the chain plate bolts be set to the mast?
A picture is worth a thousand words. If you have one I would appreciate it.
As I researched this on this site and others I found opinions but no answers directly relating to my boat. I would like a suggestion on a good general "Sailboat" maintenance and design book for future reference.
Thanks much.
