I had to pull the chain plate deck covers off to reseal the chain plates. I found washers under the plate at the screw holes. Half the holes were stripped and the screw just pulled out. One good screw per plate though. I went ahead and rebedded knowing I'm going to have to do it over but it'll get me through the summer/fall. When I redo them, I have to solve this stipped screw hole problem. If I go to a bigger screw, it's real close to encroaching on the hole for the chain plate and I'll have more problems down the road. I think I will just through bolt them and have a little more polished SS to look at down below. The holes already go through the deck. The washers I don't understand. I left em out. Other solutions??

why not just counter sink the screw holes and fill them with thickend epoxy and re drill the screw holes to the correct size and use new screws the proper size...i think there is a tutorial on this in Mainesail's site......just a thought.....

I put washers under the covers on my 9.2A to ensure that there would be a solid cushion of sealant to prevent leakage. I have had to rebuild both center chainplate because of rot in the wood. Woodster has the right idea, fill the enlarged holes with thickened epoxy and re-drill.

i am in the process of rebuilding mine at this time..... along with a lot of other things including the blocking between the keel and the cabin sole....i am a little anal i guess but i have a very hard time believing as well built theses S2's are they would have use pine boards for filler in this area.....

also while i have the chain plates out I am chamfering the slotted holes in order to get more butyl sealant around the plates

Epoxy idea is interesting. Would have to be pretty thick to not run through the deck and on to the headliner. I found out why "they" used washers. The deck around the chain plate is not flat athwartships and the contact between deck/plate is not total which probably why one screw/plate is stripped.

The store where you buy the epoxy will have the appropriate thickener, the clerk should be able to give directions. Tape off the bottom of the hole, mix the epoxy and make sure you fill the holes all the way.

I have a 1976 S2 9.2A, the floor under the mast compression post in the cabin was depressed and the door to the head didn't shut properly. I investigated and found that there was nothing supporting the post under the floor. I removed the lav holding tank and cut an (approximately) 12"X14" access hole in the floor. I then raised the door frame with a 4X4 and hydraulic jack and inserted a teak block under the post area.
There are some previous posts in this forum about the same issue, the area seems to be poorly supported and ventilated.

thanks Bob i am going to cut out the floor in that area and repair the bad spot with a teak or mahogany block and glass the thing in to isolate it from the eliments....cant tell much from this pic but this is how my boat looks at this time ......

Woodster, I don't think I envy you. And to tape off the bottom of the holes, I would need to pull back the headliner quite a bit. I know that's wussing out compared to the photo above......
