Chain plate bulkheads and toerail repairs
Check the archives for these topics. There have been detailed discussions about all in the last year. There are some very good pictures of Appleman's restoration of a 26.I replaced the toerails on my 26 with HDPE. What was left of the old ones came up easily after plugs removed and philips head screw holes cleaned. From what I know and have seen on several bulkhead fixes, as previous poster stated, each bulkhead needs to be copied from previous bulkhead and slowly fitted to boat. Some shaving and sanding will be neccessary if you make it right. However, if bulkhead is in generally good condition and not rotted out, consider doing what I did. My bulkhead had a small amount of water damage, but was not completely bad. I used penetrating epoxy first to get into any damaged wood. Then I used color epoxy paste with glass fibers to fill surface defects and to reinforce the four big bolt holes. I also had to reattach with epoxy the upper tab on the starboard side and added an additional layer of glass just to make sure. Then I redrilled the bolt holes and stained the whole bulkhead to a new shade to be uniform.Ed K26
