vice
an immoral or evil habit or practice. Synonyms: fault, failing, foible, weakness. Antonyms: virtue.

vise
any of various devices, usually having two jaws that may be brought together or separated by means of a screw, lever, or the like, used to hold an object firmly while work is being done on it.

Both put something in a squeeze in America. Is that true in Britain ?

Fine type of splice

The rope to chain splice is a fine way to connect the two and lasts many yrs.

When you resplice, might be a good idea to turn the line end for end to change the wear zones.

Vice??

Quite right JVB - but also "A holding device attached to a workbench; has two jaws to hold workpiece firmly in place".

BTW 'vise' does not appear in WordWeb on line dictionary.

And then there is the 'Vice Admiral' to be considered!
